The brief for this residential extension was to create a new contemporary open plan kitchen and dining space for our clients and their young family, which better suited their modern lifestyle and was lacking in their existing Victorian house. For the success of this project we felt it was vital to go beyond the purely functional requirements of the clients brief and seek to strengthen the visual and physical links between the house and the garden.

The resulting design consists of a pure and crisp modern extension that extends along the northern side of the clients garden defining a new external living space with large areas sliding/folding glazing along the southern elevation. This creates an unrestricted line of sight through the spaces and panoramic views of the garden from inside the new extension whilst allowing the boundary between the internal and external environment to be blurred during the summer months when the client can completely open the glazing along the southern elevation.
