Located in Leek, the Westwood High School principally occupies a listed 19th century country house which has been extended and modified over the years as the school has expanded. We were commissioned to design a new science block to enable the relocation of the schools art department and allow a more integrated delivery of the art and science syllabuses.
The new extension has been orientated to face the existing listed façade and forms a courtyard, which has the potential of being landscaped so that the new external space can be enjoyed and utilised by pupils and staff alike. Materials have been chosen to relate to the historic setting of the site as well as to create a contemporary educational environment.
